My Story

What Made Me

The short story behind sales_essentially.

Lorenz Neff

I started working in sales about 13 years ago. Along the way I went from sales rep, to lead, to manager, and I helped grow Bookboon, a small Danish software company, from €300K to €7.5M in annual revenue. The Customer Acquisition Engine we built back then became a major factor in Bookboon's €75M acquisition by The Access Group in 2022.

A lot of my friends are small business owners, and on my 39th birthday I realized they'll never have the money to hire me (haha), or more precisely, someone like me. They have great businesses, but they're stuck with either amateurs or one of those awful growth agencies.

So I started sales_essentially, with one goal: to give small businesses leading sales capabilities for a fraction of the cost.

If you want to know how growing up amongst rich kids shaped my understanding of business, or laugh about how terribly untalented I was when I started in sales, I wrote two stories on Substack.
